Parting Shots
It’s easy to see why people love it out west so much. Next time, maybe we’ll do Salt Lake to Point Reyes.
Ghost Town
Bodie, CA. In its heyday it was the second largest town in California. Empty by the 1940’s, it’s been carefully preserved and the whole place is refreshingly free of t-shirt shops and vending machines.
Alabama Hills and Mt Whitney
It was definitely worth it to visit Alabama Hills. They filmed a lot of the old westerns here (and newer movies like Iron Man). Nearby Lone Pine even holds an annual film festival for old-school aficionados. Keep heading up the road and you’re on your way to the heavens. Well, Mt Whitney at least: the highest point in the contiguous US. We didn’t make the hike, but the drive to base camp took us high enough for a quick visit. We went from 90° in Death Valley the day before to about 40° at the trailhead with ice and snow all around because of the 8,600 foot elevation gain. It was a bit surreal.
Mesquite Flat
Mesquite Flat in the middle of Death Valley. Great dunes: tons of variety, wildlife, and gorgeous views.
